Manufactured by Jay Ward Productions, the series is structured as a variety show, with the major feature being the serialized adventures of the anthropomorphic moose Bullwinkle the two title characters and flying Shrimp Rocky. The adversaries in the majority of the adventures would be the Russian-like spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. Supporting sections include Dudley Do-Right, Peabody's Improbable History, and Fractured Fairytales .
Rocky & Bullwinkle is well known for quality writing and wry humor. Mixing topical and cultural satire, puns, and comedy that was self-referential, it appealed to adults as well as kids. It was one of the very first animations whose animation was outsourced. Storyboards were sent to Gamma Productionsa Mexican division also employed by Total Television. So the art features a choppy, unpolished look and also the animation is limited even by tv animation standards. Yet the series has been held in high respect by those who have experienced it. Some critics described the series together with pictures like a radio program that was well-written.
