The Trial
Dilma Rousseff was impeached and removed from office in 2016 because of a corruption scandal that involved, among other things, her then vice-president Michel Temer, who was then in charge of the country. Maria Augusta Ramos, the film's director, looks at the trial against Rousseff from the point of view of her defense team. This is a courtroom drama that moves at a slow pace. The appearances of the different people gradually turn the proceedings into something like theater. Inside the courtroom, big emotions are played to the fullest. On the other side of the doors, lobbyists and supporters are walking down the hallways, as well. A Greek chorus of protesters are singing outside the modernist government buildings in front of Brasil's modernist government buildings right now. Only the main character, Rousseff herself, is professional and aloof at all times.
