What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael
Pauline Kael (1919--2001) was definitely among the most significant titles in film criticism. Even a Californian native, she composed her very first review and joined'The New Yorker' . Praised for her writing style that is feisty and opinionated and famous for her sometimes ruthless and subjective reviews, Kael's writing was rooted and in her experience of watching a film for a member of the audience. Loved and hated in equal measure -- adored by additional musicians for whom she was immensely influential, and hated by filmmakers whose films she cried - Kael shattered movies that have since become classics like The Sound of Music and raved about others like Bonnie and Clyde. She was aware of the difficulties for women working in the movies and also in film criticism, and fought sexism, both within her reviews as well as within her media appearances.
