Strauss: Die Fledermaus
``'Forget the irreparable', was the axiom by which the Habsburg monarchy approached its passing. Even the despondency of those twilight years could however infiltrate the gaiety of operetta." Wrote Claudio Magris about Die Fledermaus, a unsettling work with its maelstrom of identities, drinking and dance. Die Fledermaus was clearly one of those works performed in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp at which some of Europe's very finest musicians were held by the Nazis. By this setting inspired, Célie Pauthe draws on the salutary frivolity that brings the work to the force of resistance that it inspired and also life.
